Systems Test Engineer- See & Spray

Sunnyvale, CA

Position Description

We’re Blue River, a team of innovators driven to radically change agriculture by creating intelligent machinery. We empower our customers – farmers - to implement more sustainable solutions: optimize chemical usage, reimagining routine processes, and improving farming yields year after year. We believe that focusing on the small stuff – pixel-by-pixel and plant-by-plant - leads to big gains. By partnering with John Deere, we are innovating computer vision, machine learning, robotics and product management to solve monumental challenges for our customers.

Our people are at the heart of what we do. Through cross-discipline collaboration, this mission-driven and daring team is eager to define the new frontier of agricultural robotics. We are always asking hard questions, rapidly iterating, and getting our boots in the field to figure it out. We won’t give up until we’ve made a tangible and positive impact on agriculture.

As a Systems Integration & Test Engineer, you will work on the deployment of See and Spray across a fleet of vehicles through testing, triaging, and debugging. This role is multi-team, multi-disciplinary with high visibility and will have a large impact on the future of precision agriculture. Our teams are empowered to figure out how to overcome challenges, plan and prioritize work – everyone is a key contributor.

  • Execute the integration of complex multi-disciplinary robotic systems with Embedded Software, Electrical Engineering, Operations, and related teams around System Verification and Validation (V&V) within Blue River and John Deere.
  • Build and maintain test strategies and tests that check the intersection of HW, SW, and cloud components working together, ensuring proper system functionality for fleet-deployed vehicles
  • Understand and stay up-to-speed on complex problems in real-time, escalating to appropriate stakeholders across the organization
  • Directly support fleet deployment from the cloud to the vehicle (e.g., over-the-air update, telemetry)
  • Troubleshoot system-level issues including but not limited to platform and application SW, sensors, compute HW, electrical, and cloud-based systems.
  • Translating system and customer needs into testable requirements

  • At a minimum, Bachelor’s of Science in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or related field with sufficient practical work experience, with at least 3 years of relevant professional experience in high tech vehicle, robotic, or agricultural products
  • Ability to operate effectively and autonomously across multiple teams in situations of ambiguity, with only high level direction
  • Generalist attitude with proven ability to dive deep fast and willingness to learn continuously
  • Ability to write simple software scripts to support testing, deployment, and on-device automation (Python, Bash, or C++) or microcontroller programming such as Parker and Danfoss
  • Familiarity with Linux (systemd, networking sockets, bash)
  • Preferred experience in one or more of the following fields: SW engineering, embedded software and systems, RTOS, CAN, cloud computing, networking, system timing, sensors (camera, radar, lidar), geo-localization (GPS & IMU), remote sensing, machine learning/artificial intelligence or on-edge compute

We have been operating as “mostly remote” during the pandemic. As we transition back to the office, we are introducing our Workplace Flexibility Model. This role will be based out of our Sunnyvale office and balance in-office time with flexibility to support other needs you have in your life. This flexibility could be used to reduce the Bay Area commute burden by working from home a couple days a week, support parent or caregiver needs, or allow space for you to do the other things you love, whatever that might be! There are times when achieving great work is more productive when working where you work best. That’s the point of this model...flexibility for you.
