DevOps Platform Engineer

Sunnyvale CA

Position Description

We’re Blue River, a team of innovators driven to radically change agriculture by creating intelligent machinery. We empower our customers – farmers - to implement more sustainable solutions: optimize chemical usage, reimagining routine processes, and improving farming yields year after year. We believe that focusing on the small stuff – pixel-by-pixel and plant-by-plant - leads to big gains. By partnering with John Deere, we are innovating computer vision, machine learning, robotics and product management to solve monumental challenges for our customers.

Our people are at the heart of what we do. Through cross-discipline collaboration, this mission-driven and daring team is eager to define the new frontier of agricultural robotics. We are always asking hard questions, rapidly iterating, and getting our boots in the field to figure it out. We won’t give up until we’ve made a tangible and positive impact on agriculture.

Position Summary:

As a Devops Platform Engineer you’re curious and interested in how things can be better for people creating software and applications for our core product. We deliver a production-grade revenue-generating product which is constantly being improved which you’ll contribute to. In addition, you’ll be involved in automating build systems, figuring out how to deliver data between platforms, and stitching APIs together to simplify science and engineering prototyping.

Most of all, you’ll be asked to believe in your own agency and to accept critique with a growth-oriented mindset. BlueRiver is interested in sustainable growth for all of our engineers and we believe a large part of growth comes from you having thoughts about who you are or who you want to be.

Position Responsibility:

You’ll be responsible for being thoughtful about what high-quality work means and finding ways to collaborate with others that are respectful and productive. You’ll need to advocate for how things can be better through action and contributions to code. When things get tough, you’ll be responsible for talking through the problem and differentiating decisions you can undo from those you cannot.

Technically you’ll need the ability to provision and maintain infrastructure on AWS using Terraform. By virtue of this, you should have a familiarity, if not a working knowledge of, bazel, buck, or pants as a tool for creating repeatable builds and changes. As a person who will maintain what they build, being on-call for your components is expected as well.

Required Experience:

  • Ideally 3-5 years of experience as an SRE or DevOps engineer
  • Git contributions and code-review in a professional setting
  • Dockerfile writing and container management with ECR or Artifactory
  • Slack, Confluence/Jira, and Github/Gerrit/GitLab comfort
  • Have solved problems in a domain which you do not hold expertise using collaboration
  • Scaled workloads on AWS Batch, Kubeflow, or similar
  • Terraform or CloudFormation infrastructure management
  • Bazel experience is highly preferred

  • You can write basic Python code using the pep8 or Google style
  • The documentation you write is concise, accurate, and with your code
  • Given a git URL you can clone, commit, and push without assistance
  • Knowledge of how a sprint should work and work should be decomposed
  • Iterative development experience and an eye for continuous improvement
  • Ability to read code and configuration to get a sense of what it is doing
  • Collaborative team spirit
  • Good communication skills both written and verbal
