Software Development Engineer in Test
We’re Blue River, a team of innovators driven to radically change agriculture by creating intelligent machinery. We empower our customers – farmers - to implement more sustainable solutions: optimize chemical usage, reimagining routine processes, and improving farming yields year after year. We believe that focusing on the small stuff – pixel-by-pixel and plant-by-plant - leads to big gains. By partnering with John Deere, we are innovating computer vision, machine learning, robotics and product management to solve monumental challenges for our customers.
Our people are at the heart of what we do. Through cross-discipline collaboration, this mission-driven and daring team is eager to define the new frontier of agricultural robotics. We are always asking hard questions, rapidly iterating, and getting our boots in the field to figure it out. We won’t give up until we’ve made a tangible and positive impact on agriculture.
As a Software Development Engineer in Test you will work with your teammates to deliver continuous See & Spray improvements to market. The schedule is aggressive and the agricultural season waits for nothing and nobody (except rain). The system needs to meet the high performance and reliability standards that our customers expect and rely on. We tackle our objectives with cross functional engineering teams consisting of systems and embedded software, test and QA, mechatronics, computer vision and machine learning engineers. These teams are empowered to figure out how to meet the challenges, plan and prioritize work - managers don’t have all the answers.
Ultimately testing our product needs to be done in a field but we prefer to catch as many problems as possible on our test benches first. As a Software QA Engineer you will help extend and maintain our test automation framework. Creating libraries, interfaces, and other infrastructural algorithms that support the development of test cases, traceability of test results, and overall management of the QA testing process. You will also directly develop test cases to ensure that the many software and hardware components of our complex, distributed system work together reliably. You work closely with a development team to learn about new features and how they can be tested. You develop and execute them on our test beds and test machines in the field as needed. You work with developers, DevOps, systems, and other engineers to ensure our test framework adequately supports our testing needs.
- Create and maintain test framework software.
- Extend infrastructure to track tests and test results in our test management system.
- Develop test cases for various software and hardware components.
- Proactively build out test fixtures as needed to expand test coverage.
- Work closely with developers to identify what framework items are needed.
- Test on the real machine in collaboration with our field team.
We value a variety of voices. You don’t need to check every box on this list to apply.

- Expertise in automated testing of complex distributed robotics systems
- 3-5 years QA experience
- Experience with CI systems such as Buildkite/Jenkins
